“Moneyball” is one of those ubiquitous terms that is widely used, but seldom understood. In the past decade since Michael Lewis published Moneyball, The Art of Winning an Unfair Game, “moneyball” has become the code word for doing more with less, especially when it comes to high priced talent (baseball or business). I have discovered the real secret of moneyball is to view sourcing and recruiting through a different lens — an analytical, data driven lens.
Before you roll your eyes and think, not another set of metrics! I realize that sourcing and recruiting have become very metric and data driven. We have tools that provide amazing data on sources of hires, candidate behavior, and all the metrics that we can dream up.
Frankly, we may even have too much data; I can see a type of data fatigue setting in. That is where the principles of Moneyball come in. Moneyball teaches us that when there is too much information (no sport has more data than baseball), it is time to rethink what and how we measure success. Success in baseball is winning; success in sourcing and recruiting is hiring. And like the journey to winning in baseball, the path to hiring as viewed through the eyes of data will help us determine what activities lead to success.
There are four lessons of Moneyball that can be applied to Sourcing:
- We Must Challenge Conventional Wisdom
- There is a Science of Winning
- We Must Adapt or Die
- We Must Have the Courage to Believe the Data
